On 2 October 2025, a highly significant event took place in the historic building of the Geological Museum of the Polish Geological Institute – National Research Institute (PIG-PIB) at Rakowiecka 4 in Warsaw.
The symposium entitled “New Perspectives for the Development of Geothermal Energy in Poland: Sustainable Management of Water Resources and Geothermal Energy” brought together more than 100 stakeholders actively involved in the development of geothermal energy in Poland.
This multidisciplinary meeting was enriched by the knowledge and experience of representatives of public administration, local governments, financing institutions, research organizations, and investors.
The symposium was officially opened by:
- Prof. Krzysztof Szamałek, DSc, Eng., Director of the Polish Geological Institute – NRI,
- Prof. Krzysztof Galos, DSc, Eng., Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Climate and Environment and Chief National Geologist,
- Józef Matysiak, Vice President of the Management Board of the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management (NFOŚiGW).
The discussions were structured into three main thematic blocks, focusing on more effective utilization of Poland’s geothermal resources:
- First block: “The Role of Geothermal Energy in Building the European Green Deal” – a panel discussion moderated by Prof. Krzysztof Szamałek.
- Participants included Adam Szejnfeld (Member of the Polish Senate), Prof. Krzysztof Galos (Ministry of Climate and Environment), Józef Matysiak (NFOŚiGW), and Prof. Krzysztof Szamałek (PIG-PIB).
- Second block: “Potential and Challenges for the Development of Geothermal Energy in Poland” – an expert session featuring presentations by Dr Beata Kępińska (Mineral and Energy Economy Research Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences), Dr Mariusz Socha (Head of the Department of Thermal, Medicinal and Brine Waters, PIG-PIB), MSc Eng. Marek Hajto (AGH University of Science and Technology), Dr Eng. Bogdan Noga (Multiconsult Polska), Mikołaj Gajsler (INNARGI A/S), and Marek Zawadka (PEC “Żyrardów” Ltd.).
- Of particular importance to us as contractors was the third thematic block, “Financing and Partnerships – How to Act More Effectively Together?”, moderated by Dr Mariusz Socha (PIG-PIB).
- The panelists included Dr Eng. Bogusław Bielec (IGSMiE PAN), Dr Eng. Piotr Długosz (Proinsol Ltd.), Joanna Wróbel (Veolia Energia Łódź S.A.), Piotr Kopek (Regional Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management in Łódź), Rafał Szkaradziński (Mayor of the Szaflary Municipality), and Wiesław Podraza, owner of UOS GROUP and G-Term Energy Ltd. – Geoterma Stargard, also representing UOS Drilling S.A.
- Mr. Podraza addressed, among other topics, the challenges faced by drilling companies during project implementation and presented proposals for changes in the financing of drilling projects. These proposals are of critical importance for the continued dynamic development of geothermal energy in Poland and for increasing the level of decarbonization. As a clean, stable, and domestic source of thermal energy, geothermal energy has the potential to become one of the key pillars of Poland’s energy transition.
During the Q&A session, Mr. Tomasz Tarabura, CEO of UOS GROUP and President of the Management Board of G-Term Energy Ltd., spoke about the mental barriers affecting private investors, the Polish tariff system, and the profitability paradox.
We warmly encourage you to watch the full recording of this comprehensive event.
Those particularly interested in the third session on financing are referred to minute 3:39:00 of the recording.
The event was organized by the Department of Thermal, Medicinal and Brine Waters of the Polish Geological Institute – NRI.
